Tornado Insurance Claims: 3 Things You Need to Know

Tornados are among the most destructive of all natural disasters. When your home is impacted by a tornado, you’ll expect your insurance company to cover you.

Know Your Policy

Many homeowner’s insurance policies will cover the cost to repair or rebuild your property after suffering damage from a tornado.  However, if your policy excludes windstorm coverage, then you will not be able make a claim for tornado damage. Often unbeknownst to the homeowner, insurance companies may exclude windstorm or tornado coverage if the property is located in a wind-prone area of the country.

Remember, most homeowners’ insurance policies in the United States cover tornado damage through windstorm coverage. However, it’s important to check your policy to make sure you’re protected against tornado damage.

Understand How Coverage Is Calculated

Insurance companies compensate windstorm damage in two different ways. Based on the terms of your policy, insurance companies will cover the actual cash value or replacement cost of your property up to the limits of your policy. The difference between ACV vs RCC can be substantial. Check out our blog about that topic here.

Tornado + Water Damage

In many cases, tornados and wind damage are accompanied by rain and water damage. This can lead to a claim denial due to a dispute about the source of the damage to the property. Homeowners policies often DO NOT cover flood damage.

If water enters your home as a result of damage due to a tornado or windstorm, it should be covered by your insurance policy. However, the insurance company may attempt to initially deny coverage, claiming you failed to take adequate precautions to prevent water from entering the property.
